I am an ardent fan of the works of Emile Zola. Like his precious books I have read and enjoyed, he didn't disappoint with this one either. Liked this one immensely!! 

 Its an ongoing and nonstop feature of anxieties and fears between a husband and wife who had murdered an innocent man to get together. Therese and Camille have been brought up together by Camille's doting and caring mother. They were married to each other but Therese had little affection to this sickly man and indulges in a debauched relationship with his friend Laurent. Laurent wants to live slothfullly with someone taking care his needs. He sees opportunity for realizing his goal with Therese and both of them murder/drown Camille on a trip. After that they don't have a minute's peace and try to escape each other and also bury the memory of the ghastly act they have committed. The end comes as an ultimate peace to them both and vengeance for the mother of the murdered. 

I couldn't put this one down. Its purely psychological tension, every step of the way and towards the end .. we can sense the inevitable. The unbearable, yet unbreakable bond between Therese and Laurent .. is not just horrid, its more common place than one might think.

This is the book that is carried around and much shown in the Netflix Series : Dark. The author Tannhaus names one of the main characters after his name. This book deals in time travel and shows the nonlinearity of time and how altering a time line could result in alternative worlds/dimensions. The translation from German to English is decent..although at places, the translator got the grammer and gender pronouns wrong. This kind of confused me a bit and I had to re-read few sentences to understand the meaning.  For someone who is new to the concept of time travel and multiverse, this narrative could become quite incomprehensible.
