I have many other books from her in my tbr and having read this, I feel she is worth checking out! This book felt more targeted for children and adolescent audience but I also enjoyed it. I felt a bit of disconnect with the story because the narrator is so objective and detached in her style of writing. I didn't feel that invested in the plot as I would have had if there was more emotional depth created through the narrative. The Duchess,one of the key characters, in the story, seemed more interested in bestowing laurels, badges of honor on heroes of war than controlling the wild elements of her council or running her government efficiently. Rating: 4.5/5 Very gripping. Very compelling. I guess what really kept me hooked and what worked out for me is that there is always a hint of danger, of things going out of control with the whole world sitting on its butt and watching, doing nothing, while a bunch of young contestants try to best each other, no matter how far they go, because stakes are high and they don't want to get back to the "real" world where their lives mean boring, exhausting and nothing.  It is a reality TV game which is set up in a desert like setting. Rating: 2.75/5 I somehow felt this narrative lacked imagination. Being an ardent fantasy reader who also loves science fiction, I thought this narrative to be limited and stifled. It was like drawing a picture with a pencil and leaving it uncolored. I have picked this book without first reading the third book in the series - the 2061 : Space Odyssey but I didn't feel like I have missed much. I read the book 1 in the series long back, the most popular 2001 and had to brush up/refresh the recollection centers of my brain through Wikipedia perusal.
