This book will keep me up at night, thinking and trying to piece together all the bits and pieces revealed in the plot. If there is a flaw in the story whole, it is that it hasn't clearly stated how so many characters like Diego Marlasca, the witch of Sorrento etc. have managed to stay alive past their prime, in pristine condition. There is only a mention of the occult sacrifice and nothing else. Is there a hand of the devil in this whole bargain? If so, why? Unclear.
The main character, David Martin, writes novels and stories for news papers. He once gets a deal to write a book on Theology (creating a new religion from a book lol) from an Italian publisher Andreas Corelli. He gets an insane amount of money deposited into his bank account as part of the initial payment. As he starts working on the book, he also starts doing some research on the publisher and the previous occupant of his currently residing house. The publishing house was closed long ago and no one has heard of the publisher. And, it seems his story is a repetition of the earlier house owner , Diego Marlasca, with the same initials D.M. As the story unravels, every person whom he cares about and has interviewed is mysteriously killed. Someone is desperate to keep hidden bones hidden. To not disturb the status quo. Who could that be? He also learns that Andreas Corelli is not a living person but could be the devil himself. What can anyone do while dealing directly with him?
The writing is awesome. Character development is flawless. The atmosphere is chilling and dark. The way in which his lover Cristina died .. the scene is still swaying behind my eyes. The world building is great. I would love to wander the streets of Barcelona .. take me back to 1920s, 1930s. I was hooked to the story .. I couldn't put the book down. With every fresh murder/death, i felt nauseated and a slinking feeling creeping into me. They are all innocent and good people. Andreas Corelli..go to hell.!!
Read this one and enjoy! I will surely pick the next book in the series. Cheers 🍻 🥂
