This is a tale of vampires and love and revenge and pain and loss.
So achingly beautiful!! What moving and immersive prose! Has a swaying, persuasive, utterly compelling logic to things that are fantastical! Vampires and humans co-exist in this dangerous world imagined and brought to life by Poppy Z Brite. At start and till the story catches some momentum, I was bemused and cringed at the rotten world she shows .. a world filled with youth lost in drugs, pleasures of the flesh and completely devoid of a purpose in life. In short, most of them are lost souls who are searching for or probably don't even know that they are searching for some meaning in their lives. The Vampires in this story are also devoid of sentiments, human values and don't think twice before cheating or betraying someone they love. They are self absorbed and self serving to a fault. The author weaves an intricate tale where these vampires - pleasure seeking nomads - infringe into the lives of two best friends and bring down hell and pain in. The friends seek revenge and that is the end to a certain extent!
Some scenes are so shocking, punching to the gut, knocking off the breath .. like the one where a newbie kid is forced to suck out the life blood of his friend to display and prove loyalty to his vampire friends. Like the one where a mother tears her womb out along with a seed of vampire in her. And the grisly murders/deaths of Christian, Zillah and Wallace with cancer .. ooh! Shock and nausea causing! Reinstates my faith in the theory of Karma .. what goes around comes back around!
This is not regular vampire novel. This does have elements of obsessive love and despondency but there is also a tone of detachment and a threat of death hanging on a thread along with it. Barring the first few chapters, I eventually got used to the incestuous and homosexual relationships. The descriptions of sexual scenes between the main characters read poetic and very hypnotizing! The character of Ghost stands out. So does that of Zillah, Christian and Nothing.. some of the very memorable characters i have come across.
Overall, A very wonderfully, chilly read. Do check this out. Have an open mind though!
