Wow. What an amazing read. The factor that stands out in favor of this book is how damn good the prose is. It baited me and had me clinging to the hook till the end. The eerie atmosphere is present all through, giving chills down the spine. Very original, freakishly scary. This comprises of all the usual and unique scaring elements like making deals with the devil, eternal youth, mind control magic, binding the devil and his power among other things. There is desperation and violence resulting from that. This is the first person narrative of a woman Tess and she tells her story of how far she went and how many sacrifices she made to save and secure the most important thing to her!

A woman - a witch - actually, is cornered and is pushed past her resilience and in one final act of desperation, binds the devil to her. She had already sold her soul, in the past, to escape from a certain death. Everytime she is despairing or is in ruin, the devil approaches her to grant herself to his power and thereby allow him to gain a foothold on the world. But she resists. All she cares about is her sanctuary where she nurses and restores damaged and hurt wild animals. There comes a turn of events when her magic is made weak by the attempts of a newly arrived pastor. He plans to take away the land from her sanctuary and in an attempt to get rid of him, the woman murders him. She gets caught. She has no where to run. She has been nursing a fawn .. unusual and diabolical it is .. and she must take one extreme step in order to bind the devil and restore her power, her sanctuary and everything she ever wanted.

Its a haunting story. I outright hated the narrator and wanted her to take the fall until about 75% of the book. She was selfish and cared only about her sanctuary. She was fighting with everyone in town. The only reason she had got on well with them so far was because she had been mind controlling them with her magic. And she got that goddamn, evil fawn which has full set of teeth and which feeds on blood like a freaking carnivorous animal. She is forgiving of the animal and wouldn't let any harm come to it. It really got on my nerves like how much she is gonna overlook. And the point is she is not that bad a person. She resisted the devil, didn't let him make a foothold on the world through her, cared about all the animals and people in town, took care of everything but then she got to be treated like an evil witch by that idiot of a patriarchy man, the pastor. He was influencing and siccing all the town's folk against her and it didn't seem fair. I have some strong feelings about this.

The ending is very novel and original. I didn't see it coming. It turned the story right on its head and redeemed the narrator in my opinion. It made my jaw drop and heart to skip a beat. It felt consistent with her nature. So she binds the devil to her and escapes the murder investigation through his help. Then what happens to the town and her sanctuary comprise an  interesting turn of events. The characters are superbly developed. Do read this one!
