Frankly, I should like this book better. I mean, the author has transported herself into the thoughts of a rapidly evolving AI cuddle bunny robot, Annie and tracked the evolutionary process with integrity and much imagination. But I don't like it as much because I hated the ending. I hated the personality Annie has grown into, after much work from both herself and her owner, Doug. Sure they had hit a rough patch along their three year plus journey and he showed some inconsistent, self serving and cruel behaviour which rattled/traumatised her deeply but that is only to be subverted in the face of the change in him for better with time, right? He has certainly never demonstrated his punishing cruel self again. And his behaviour is also in response to her own betrayal initially, right?
I read the last 10 pages with mounting disbelief, apprehension and bated breath. She once wanted to run away from Doug and have her freedom but I thought she has relinquished those dreams with time. I clearly see why this book won the Clarke Award .. it totally deserves it. If one could have an autodidactic cuddle bunny like Annie for wife, they should want for nothing else, right? She totally pleases her owner, is great in bed, doesn't demand, is obliging and humble,is rapidly evolving and is also a source of tonnes of money for the owner. Then where comes the problem? There is no such thing as perfect in this world right? So with Annie, it is that she thinks a lot. She is a deep thinker and very spiritually oriented if I am to analyze her. She is dissatisfied with her life with Doug even when she is given everything.
In this book, there is obviously lots of sex involved but the descriptions never felt cringey or smutty and uncomfortable. Coming into the story a bit. There are three types of robots that can be bought by the wealthy - Abigails(cleaning and cooking), Nannies and cuddle bunnies. Doug purchased a cuddle bunny that is self evolving. From the start he treats her with respect and like a fellow human. He has had her made in the image of his ex wife and they have plenty of sex. She is very strung up about causing any displeasure to Doug and constantly monitors his emotions.
Once she is seduced and tricked into having sex with his visiting friend, Rolland. She keeps it a secret for seven months when Doug discovers her treachery. He gets angry and she tries to run away from him. He catches up to her using her tracking device. Then he humiliates her, shows cruelty and does something to put the insult to his masculinity and ego behind them. He is clearly not ready to leave Annie. They even go for counselling which helps to a great extent. The shrink injects some interesting thoughts into Annie's psyche like being honest to self and following the path which one's honest self dictates. Eventually, they make up. But she doesn't enjoy pleasing Doug like before. Doesn't enjoy sex like before. She picks his every action and puts his behaviour under the microscope. It's like we are never content with what we have no matter how good it is. She wants and yearns for more from life. She becomes a voracious reader and I thought Doug would discourage her from evolving which would have driven me against him. But no. He takes her to libraries, buys her rich clothes, books and is an ideal image of boyfriend/husband. Then the roof comes crashing on their heads. Annie makes a choice right after all that has happened. She literally shatters his heart(mine too). I want to kill her. This is the sole reason for not giving this book an over 4 rating.
Doug is the best bf one could ask for. Sure he felt betrayed and took it out on her. He showed fickleness but that was also to be expected. At times I was confounded as to what he was driving at. I meam seeing from Annie's perspective, his directives to her were jumbled and unrelated. But those were cleared up later. Why he said a certain thing or done a certain thing etc. Annie evolves from a clingy, pleasing, only for pleasure robot to someone who ponders on the ways of life and takes charge of her own life. I admire this quality and am very much interested in self growth myself. But I try not to exploit other's faith in me. I don't do things that explicitly hurt and cause pain like she has done. She feels jealous of him till the end and it felt she would be on cloud nine with his offer. But no. Where did her choice come from? I thought it was spontaneous and abrupt. It felt like an ultimate betrayal of his trust .. so much more pain inflicting than simple adultery. Adultery to say the word too .. not like they are a married couple. Not like there is a concept of monogamy among robot cuddle bunnies lol.
