Terrific story! The only drawback being the style of writing - which is quaint (perhaps expected given the time of writing) and not easy to follow. There were a few sentences I had to read multiple times to make sense of what the narrator is trying to convey - which delayed the speed of my read. But otherwise, I think it's a story worthy of a 'classic' - especially "the ending" - I didn't see it coming. It bowled me over with an unexpected punch in the gut.

The story goes thus. A young woman applies for a job and gets appointed as the governess/caretaker of two kids by a handsome, rich man. They are his brother's children and are orphans in his care. Being a hedonist and carefree man, he wanted to layoff his burden on to someone else more capable. She arrives at her new mansion with many hopes and a stout desire to please her employer. The kids are lovely and beyond any reproach. They are the sweetest, prettiest, well behaved she had ever met. But beneath the surface, she could sense that it was all an act. That - and also the note she receives which expelled the boy from his school without mentioning a reason why. Soon, she finds out that the children are not "normal" - that they are in the company of unwanted visitors from other realms - "ghosts"/evil " spirits". She joins forces with another maid in the service of the children to save/"liberate"  them from the cluthches of these spirits, but will she succeed?? How far does she go to save them and how for would the devil go to defeat her?!

Barring the writing style, I think this book is worth every minute spent reading it! šŸ‘āœŒā¤

Book Review : The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

The Perfect Couple  By Elin Hildebrand  (Nantucket #3) Published Year : 2018 Page Count: 347 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Drama, Crime, 2024-read.  Rating : 4/5  The ending is such an anticlimax and a let down for me - it almost feels like being cheated. I got so high and invested in the narrative..I lost sleep for most of last night and was reading all day since I got up this morning. The character development is ooof .. the characters are filled with life, credulity and fly off the page into the reader's mind space. I loved the layout of the narrative. I loved the writing.  I would have liked if the mother of the family was a bit on the negative side as well. I mean, really, having Nicole Kidman play the role and making it all cute, nice and kind, compassionate is like wasting enormous talent. I picked this book because I saw an ad that there is a limited series coming up on Netflix ...

Book Review: Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Gideon the Ninth  By Tamsin Muir  Published Year: 2019 Page Count: 448 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Action, Fantasy, Magic, Necromancers, Adventure, Murder Mystery, Suspense, Lesbian, 2024-read.  Rating : 4.75/5 šŸ™‚šŸ™‚šŸ™‚šŸ™‚šŸŒŸ Wow. The twists!! And wow wow wow .. the lies!! The deceptions ! Its exotic and steamy! Unputdownable. Highly Addictive. Been wanting to read this for a while now! The paperbacks being so expensive, I settled in for a Kindle experience. I am not disappointed. The lack of smut - which I expected/anticipated when I heard its lesbian fantasy - is such a relief. The tone of the narrator is serious throughout. I had some laugh out loud moments once or twice but that's it. One of the best fantasy book series ever!  I think it is the prose and writing style that I had to read this book real slow so as not to miss anything out. There is action in this book , necromancer magic, fantastic games and there are murders to solve and lyc...

Book Review : Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout

Tell Me Everything  (AMGASH #5)  By Elizabeth Strout Published Year: 10 September 2024 Page Count: 300 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Contemporary Fiction, Drama, Murder Mystery, 2024-read.  Rating : 4/5 The prose is so good and comforting. I couldn't put this book away for long. I picked the book because it is a recent release and the title felt immersive. Few pages into the book, I realized, that most of the characters have long histories and this is a book (5th!!) in a series. But I read it anyway and it could be read as a standalone as well.. only we will not have a complete picture of all the people and their interrelationships.  The three main characters are Olive Kittredge, Lucy Barton and Bob Burgess. There are multiple books each with these as the main characters, drawing up to this one. (I should check them out. I love the author already!) So, in this book, Bob Burgess and Lucy Barton are close friends and Bob nurses a secret crush o...
