Genres : Horror, Dystopia, Science fiction, Future, 2021-read.

Rating 5/5

So I am giving this one a 5 star rating. This is one of those books that gets a lower rating for being good. There were many futuristic dystopian novels I had read and loved/liked/hated some of them but none gave me the shivers like this one. Humans supplanting animals is an agreeable and digestible future?? I felt that cruelty and ruthlessness are celebrated in this world the author created and the main protagonist at the end reveals his dark side which comes as a blow. I had few ideas on how the story might have turned out while reading it and extrapolating but what actually came is a jolt. The terms and fight for human rights would have a whole new level of meaning in this society.

Coming to the story, Tejos Marcos is a man pursuing and being pursued by many evils. His beloved father is suffering from dementia and is locked up in a mental hospital. His wife has left him bereaved after their young son dies suddenly.  His only other family,  his sister, cares little for them and when she has to, pretends her way through the basic necessities. The world they are living in is at some point in a distant future. Some virus infects all animals and they are deemed unfit for living. Eating them could be fatal to humans and also getting a scratch or a bite from them. So huge number of animal carcasses are piled up and set to fire in a bid to rid themselves of the burden. After a while, humans craving for animal meats resort to cannibalism. Doctors also suggest that essential amino acids needed are not fully provided by plant proteins. So cannibalism is legitimized.

Supply plants crop up where massive numbers of humans are bred like animals in cages - under proper care, vaccinations, food and regulations. Their vocal cords are cut off at the beginning to keep them from screaming their heads off. They are highly docile and domesticated except for the females who are pregnant. Pregnancy is only achieved through artificial insemination. Processing plants are the next in line which turn the "heads" (these products/human animals) into usable products for the butcher shops. Marcos is a "big" guy in one of the most known processing plants. Heads are stunned, killed, dried, cut into pieces before shipped off to the butcher shop.

Heads are used for pets - very degrading to even think of, for lab experiments, for food and quality meat. Marcos is once gifted a female "head" as  pet. He thinks of getting rid of her but he impregnates her. Its a crime according to their laws. He conceals her in his house and protects her with tenderness and great care. This behavior of his is what makes his subsequent actions unbelievably cruel and wanton. If he had never shown kindness to the girl, it would have been fine I guess. He would have been one of the rest of them but now there is no match to him in his deviousness. The ending is a blow to faith and trust. It must be read without miss!!

Book Review : The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

The Perfect Couple  By Elin Hildebrand  (Nantucket #3) Published Year : 2018 Page Count: 347 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Drama, Crime, 2024-read.  Rating : 4/5  The ending is such an anticlimax and a let down for me - it almost feels like being cheated. I got so high and invested in the narrative..I lost sleep for most of last night and was reading all day since I got up this morning. The character development is ooof .. the characters are filled with life, credulity and fly off the page into the reader's mind space. I loved the layout of the narrative. I loved the writing.  I would have liked if the mother of the family was a bit on the negative side as well. I mean, really, having Nicole Kidman play the role and making it all cute, nice and kind, compassionate is like wasting enormous talent. I picked this book because I saw an ad that there is a limited series coming up on Netflix ...

Book Review: Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Gideon the Ninth  By Tamsin Muir  Published Year: 2019 Page Count: 448 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Action, Fantasy, Magic, Necromancers, Adventure, Murder Mystery, Suspense, Lesbian, 2024-read.  Rating : 4.75/5 🙂🙂🙂🙂🌟 Wow. The twists!! And wow wow wow .. the lies!! The deceptions ! Its exotic and steamy! Unputdownable. Highly Addictive. Been wanting to read this for a while now! The paperbacks being so expensive, I settled in for a Kindle experience. I am not disappointed. The lack of smut - which I expected/anticipated when I heard its lesbian fantasy - is such a relief. The tone of the narrator is serious throughout. I had some laugh out loud moments once or twice but that's it. One of the best fantasy book series ever!  I think it is the prose and writing style that I had to read this book real slow so as not to miss anything out. There is action in this book , necromancer magic, fantastic games and there are murders to solve and lyc...

Book Review : Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and his Years of Pilgrimage  By Haruki Murakami  Published Year: 2013 Page Count: 310 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Contemporary Fiction, Coming of Age, Mental Trauma, Relationships, 2024-read.  Rating : 4.95/5 🙂 😎 😀 🙂 💫 Murakami brilliantly portrays how shocking and traumatic experiences can get carried over, for many years afterward, if they are not resolved. These have a devastating impact on the relationships and expectations of the person who suffered. The writing is simple and flowing. The pace of the novel is medium and hooks the reader right from the start. I have come to care for each of the characters in the story and not just the protagonist, Tsukuru Tazaki. He also shows what can happen once the person confronts his trauma, talks it out with the perpetrators and realizes that he is better off because of this. Loved the book. Highly recommend.  Tsukuru Tazaki is an introverted, well balanced student who drea...
