A wonderful and eye opening read. Makes us look around, question and ponder if what meets the eye is what truly is! If what we see and perceive is not an illusion behind which there exists, a scary reality waiting to pounce upon and take over! What if there are portals to other worlds or universes that can be controlled and manipulated by entities - not entirely good or bad - which can summon dangerous beings into ours and we need a shield of protection against defeat. Very thoughtful and ingenious work by Miss Sarah J Maas. Highly recommend to all scifi lovers and magic lovers out there!
Celaena Sardothien is the best assassin in all the empire of Eurilea. She is condemned to suffer the fate of a slave in the salt mines of Endovier. She is rescued by the crown prince and is made to participate in a competition to become the champion on King of Adarlan. The king is kind of a dictator who is ruthless and even the crown prince, his son, shakes in his boots to oppose him or take an opposing stance against him. The king knows the potential of Celaena and wishes to see her win so that he could use her skills for his own mysterious ends. But during the games and tests and fighting lurking evil forces, Celaena falls in love with both the crown prince, Dorian and her captain, Chaol. Both men are equally drawn to her like magnets to iron but both fear the king too much to get too close to her.
Eventually she defeats everything that needs to be defeated - with some external, divine help and internal, friendly support. What awaits her, in the future, is of great curiosity to me. What I felt a bit skeptical about is the unreasonably strong nature she had - it is not human strength she possessed - both physically, mentally and emotionally. She is all alone by herself and yet felt unaffected by fears and concerns rocking everyone around her. I would have liked a touch of vulnerability and helplessness in her. She is both too closed off to the outer world and also too unreservedly open to it. She let in all the forces of universe access her and that perhaps allowed them to also shield her and guide her in time. Like this book .... willing to pursue the other books in the series. :) :)
