These are the best evolution of species books ever!!
Adrian has turned into such a novel, brilliant author for my scifi taste buds. He is churning out the right material to quench my hunger and yearning for proper science fiction books. I usually take time between books of a series but after I put down Children of Time, I had to start this. I am amazed at the creative capacity of the author's mind. He not only gave us planets populated with human - spider species, sentient and highly evolved octopi, but also an alien infested planet that is deadly and highly fatal to all it comes in contact with! Absolutely loved this book.
The interweave of past and present is mind blowing. What happened when earth went mute and killed off all its space stations through a virus .. what happened when an alien species caught up with humans exploring their planet .. and what happens when human-spider explorers enter this strange pouch of space and try to make contact with already terrified octopuses and eager to devour alien parasites? It's divine.
On the green planet, on the Kern's planet, humans and spiders have co-evolved together and found ways to communicate with each other. While spiders rely on touch and vibrations, humans need speech to communicate. They make a foray into space to meet with any other terraformed and cultivated species on distant planets. They enter the space system with two planets - Nod and Damascus. Nod is where alien parasites reside and lay in waiting. Damascus is home for octopuses that are evolving with help of human technology that were long dead to the past. They are initially afraid to be in contact with the humans because of a poignant and rich history. What is it? What has happened in the past that would put them on their guard against their Gods/creators ?
The parasite cells infest a body and consume all its thoughts, memories and body functions until they become a part within itself. They have set out in their journey to explore and consume the universe but all their experiences show how limited they are to their host's memories and functions. The ending is not really unpredictable but it felt that way until I read it.
Do check this out for more know how of how clearly and brilliantly defined the worlds and creatures are. Adrian is a brilliant, thinking man!
