With this read, I complete all the published books in the series, Children of Time. I adore the writing and the content put out by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I have turned one of his staunch supporters after reading this series. I like the way his mind works. This book like the former two have a common history to build upon. There is a stunning and shocking twist towards the climax which added a lot of sense in retrospect. Who are these children of memory? How can there be children from memory? Was that memory even real in the first place?
Human beings haven't found intelligent life anywhere in their centuries spanning search. They decide to find and identify Earth like planets and then terraform them to make life feasible. Several teams of scientists are sent out to terraform and grow/cultivate various species on these planets. In the previous two books, we came across spiders/portiids(Book #1), octopii( Book #2), Corvids/crows (Book #2) which are grown and evolved through the efforts of humans of the past. (Humans later encounter naturally sentient, alien Algae that can absorb different intelligences and memories within itself .. Algae/Miranda from Book #2.) While these terraforming activities are going on, the human race back on Earth have managed to poison themselves and it resulted in mass deaths, sent out a virus signal that also killed off distant humans at terraforming sites. One of the lucky survivors is Avarana Kern. She is the only remnant from the Golden/giant human race that accomplished so much before destroying itself.
From the ruins of this old race, humans spring up again on Earth .. but they are much inferior in their capabilities of handling technology. They also run the same circle of self destruction. Fleeing from a failing planet, they make out for these farther corners of space where terraforming occurred to different extents on different planets. One such space ship Enkidu reached the planet,Imir and some of the humans descend to make life happen. They plant crops, introduce several human tools and equipment, some animals into the ecosystem. They don't plan for contingencies. They simply live from day to day, leading life of hard work and brainless labor. Into this world, Kern and her team enter. What do they learn of the people and the planet? What is the great twist awaiting us towards the end? Is everything they have done for nothing then?
Very immersive read! Do check it out !
