Movie Review: Mother! (2017)

 Mother! (2017)

Written and Directed by: Darren Arronofsky

Starring : Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem

Genre : Mythological, Bibilical, Horror, Suspense, 2024-watched.

Rating : 10/10

The camera lens follows Jennifer. We see the situations from her point of view. Which was eerie at first but totally scary later on.

Wow. What a movie ! Knocked my breath off. There were multiple indicators, while watching, that suggested the movie is not going to end on a note of hope or wellness. One of them is display of religious fanaticism. When mobs go mad and do things, individuals are no longer acting on their consciousness/conscience. Things go out of hand pretty fast .. as this story demonstrates. Its pure madness and sheer hell. I wanted to fast forward multiple times but also didn't want to miss out.

A husband and wife live in a secluded mansion, leading a peaceful, undisturbed life. Jennifer is happy with just the two of them. The husband doesn't feel compelled to write his poetry and seeks out external company. When a couple come into their house at the suggestion of the husband, Jennifer loses her cool. She wants to kick them out but they stay. And then they leave as sudden as they had come. Jennifer challenges her husband that he doesn't love her because they are not having intercourse at all.  And she wants a baby.

So she gets pregnant. The husband has other plans for the baby. The day she announces her pregnancy news to him, he gets a sudden epiphanic inspiration to his poem. Then he writes his poem, sends off a draft to his publisher. People, strangers, knuckle heads, fanatics pour into his house, sending a full pregnant Jennifer into throes of despair and hysteria. This time Jennifer loses more than her cool. Is the husband a satanist? Or is he the devil?

 Such brilliant acting by Jennifer!!!

The story had me twisting in knots. I wanted to quit and I didn't want to stop watching. Super novel story that makes The Rosemary's baby look less scary. Watch it.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough book review

The Thorn Birds  By Colleen McCullough  Rating 3.75/5 Genres : Australia, Vatican city, Cardinal, Romance, Generational fiction, Historical fiction  Bah. I dont know. I felt this is just an ok sort of book. The only aspect that stirred me and struck a chord with me is the all encompassing, soul level love between Maggie and Father Ralph de Bricassart. Everything else - no matter how juicy, emotional or dramatic just failed to make an impact. The story covers the lives of three generations of women of the Cleary/Armstrong family line - their cherished dreams and dashed hopes, their hurts and heartbreaks over unrequited, failed loves..their finally getting what they wanted but it not being fully enough.. well, it sounds and feels like a roller coaster.  And whats more..there is plenty of repeat in the events of their lives..what has happened to the mother, happens to the daughter and so on..  Coming to the story. Maggie Cleary is brought up with a ...

Book Review : The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

The Perfect Couple  By Elin Hildebrand  (Nantucket #3) Published Year : 2018 Page Count: 347 pages  Medium Used: Kindle PW  Genre : Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Drama, Crime, 2024-read.  Rating : 4/5  The ending is such an anticlimax and a let down for me - it almost feels like being cheated. I got so high and invested in the narrative..I lost sleep for most of last night and was reading all day since I got up this morning. The character development is ooof .. the characters are filled with life, credulity and fly off the page into the reader's mind space. I loved the layout of the narrative. I loved the writing.  I would have liked if the mother of the family was a bit on the negative side as well. I mean, really, having Nicole Kidman play the role and making it all cute, nice and kind, compassionate is like wasting enormous talent. I picked this book because I saw an ad that there is a limited series coming up on Netflix ...
