As the genre section of this review shows, there are a lot of elements in this plot. But it is very well put together and detailed in description that made the book a gripping narrative. Most of the characters in the plot are either human, djinn, ifrit or half djinns. I have gained a lot of information and knowledge on djinns and the various ways of dealing with them. I found all the characters, even the most sinister and ambitious ones, to be highly endearing. I didn't want even the djinn to suffer and self mutilate even if it is only temporary!
Egypt, in this alternate universe, is a well developed, superpower country with Cairo overflowing with sky scrapers, mansions, lodging Europeans alongside native folk as a thriving culture. One of the richest man,a British Egyptian, Alistair Worthington, has built out an empire for himself in Egypt. He is also the founder of a secret society that is dedicated to finding and collecting all the artifacts of an ancient holy man Al Jahiz. Some call, Al Jahiz, a dervish like sage, holy man. Some call him a visionary. Some just call him a mad man. One night, when all the members of this society are murdered through singeing of their bodies without the fire effecting their clothes or jewelry, the police suspect supernatural foul play. They assign the case to Fatma, an agent with the Egyptian ministry that deals with alchemy, enchantments and supernatural entities. She usually works by herself but this time she has to team up with a newbie Hadia. They both are also aided by a half djinn and a man who claims to be descended from God Sobek, the crocodile God of the Nile.
As the duo scour through subtle hints, sometimes riddles, they get and uncover the mystery of the mass murder and the supernatural entities behind, we get a fully enjoyable and informative ride along. There are illusion djinns that change the setting of their surroundings and themselves included. There are djinn that are self regenerative and don't fall sick easily. There are other kinds which can put a magic lock upon some texts of a book, there by, barring the knowledge from being learnt. Its amazing.
And multiple worlds or realms in existence..calling or setting up a portal for evil forces to enter..a talisman that chooses its weilder and can control these djinns .. its all so so amazing. This is my first book on these topics and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!!
The writing is good. I have long paragraphs highlighted in my kindle. The pacing is really fast. Especially some scenes where the duo agents have to fight ghuls and ifrits from the other, nether realm .. it went like a breeze. There are plenty of face offs between the villain and the duo agents but they scarce recognize the villain as being so!
🍻 🥂 cheers!!
